The term Baptism is the English translation of the Greek word “Baptizo” which simply means to plunge, submerge, immerse or dip. Initially, the term was associated with any particular religion. However, after John the Baptist’s unique ministry of baptizing people, the term was and still is mostly associated with Christianity; identifying with death, burial and resurrection of Jesus Christ. It is important however to remember, that we are not baptized to join a denomination, but to follow Christ. Since obedience is a sign of spiritual maturity and Scripture instructs believers to be baptized. Therefore, Baptism should be part of every believer’s experience.
Why should I be Baptized?
Water Baptism is an act of obedience to the Word of God which symbolizes the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus. It is an outward sign of an inward spiritual transformation in the believer’s heart.
And this water symbolizes baptism that now save you also not the removal of dirt from the body but the pledge of a good conscience toward God. It saves you by resurrection of Jesus Christ.
(1 Peter 3:21)
All believers who have given their life to Christ, are expected to take part in this Baptismal ordinance after conversion. It is a sign of surrendering, dying and rising up with Christ. This ordinance is only for believers who are willing to serve and walk with the Lord, those who have faith and have repented of their old ways.
Can anyone keep these people from being baptized with water? They have received the Holy Spirit just as we have.
(Acts 10:47)
How Should I Be Baptized?
Many denominations use different methods of baptism, some sprinkle or pour water, while others use total immersion. Acts 8:38 and Matthew 3:16 mention water immersion versus sprinkling.
The early Chruch baptized:
- in the name of the Lord Jesus (Acts 8:16)
- in the name of Jesus (Acts 2:38)
- in the name of the Lord (Acts 10:48)
When should I be Baptized?
Baptism is a meaningful and life-changing spiritual experience. It does not remit sin and we do not receive Salvation through baptism, but through believing in the Lord Jesus Christ. It should be viewed as an important spiritual step versus a religious ritual.
He said to them God into all the word and preach the good news to all creation. Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned.
(Mark 16:15-16)
In What Manner?
Baptism should be carried out in the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. (Matthew 28:19) This means to be baptized in the name and authority of Jesus.
For in Him dwells all the fullness of the Godhead bodily
(Colossians 2:9)
When He had been baptized, Jesus came up immediately from the water. He saw the Spirit of God descending like above and enlighten upon him
(Mt. 3:16)
